The Story:
Petros the Pelican was a local legend on the island of Mykonos.
In 1955, a local fisherman picked up an exhausted pelican from the sea after it had apparently gone off course during its migration.
It was the first time the islanders had seen such a creature, and it was love at first sight. He was described as sociable, cheerful, and lazy, which perfectly represented the local spirit.
Petros the Pelican became Mykonos' superstar, and he enjoyed the privileges that came with it. He ate for free wherever he went, he was petted by Hollywood celebrities, and he even received a female pelican as a gift from the First Lady of the USA herself, Jackie Kennedy (It was a different time!).
At the peak of his career, however, he was kidnapped by men from the neighboring island, Tinos, and a war almost broke out between the two islands, but Petros managed to return home to Mykonos, where he lived happily ever after... Or rather, he was actually run over by a car and died in 1985. Petros' death did not leave Mykonos pelican-free, however, and today three of his successors carry on his legacy.
One of them is also named Petros, and his sense of direction is also said to be completely hopeless. #lostatlast
